Use Space Limitations To Advantage For A Beautiful Garden

Although a bigger spot can be perfect for growing a beautiful garden, it is every bit as possible to create something naturally unique in only a few square meters/yards of space. The key to success in creating a beautiful garden is its proportion, design and lay-out. If you have an appropriate design which fits the amount of space that you have, you can cleverly create a lovely garden even in the smallest of spaces.

Creating a small, but lovely, garden is not necessarily a small task. Whether you have made a decision to garden primarily in interesting containers or directly in the ground, plan to put forth a bit of time, effort and money. If your finances are limited, then your little bit of paradise may well be the perfect size for you. To help you create a beautiful garden and make the most of the limited space that you have to work with, here are some tips for opening your mind.

Planning and Designing Your Garden

Visually the space seems small, but just how small is it? Begin by taking measurements of the space you intend to use. Use any large piece of paper or cardboard, even paper grocery bags, to sketch out your garden to scale. Note significant permanent fixtures like water sources, fences, doors/gates, windows or a view. It doesn't need to be fancy; a rough sketch will do for starters, as you'll redo it periodically. Also mark orientation such as N,S,E,W, and, a couple of times a day, the approximate time, temp and type of sun received. Is there full sun or dappled shade? Is it windy?

To help you get motivated about your beautiful garden space, start collecting. Buy or borrow some magazines and books; save links for future reference or visual reminders. Select an inspiring garden design and mull it over. If possible, use a lay-out that is intended for small spaces just like yours. When you have some idea of the look you hope to achieve, keep your sketches, pictures and/or articles handy as you go shopping in person or online. Many times, employees at nurseries or garden centers are able to offer suggestions, ideas and product recommendations, as well as showing you plants that would be best suited for your garden spot. Try to employ organic soils, plant food and amendments, as vibrant good health and looks are essential if you can see every leaf.

Frequently the plan for a larger garden can be proportionately adapted to your gardening space since so many hybrid plant varieties are now available and bred to survive and flourish while remaining sized for the smaller garden. Also, seek advice when possible, but have the courage to break an occasional garden "rule" to have the little garden of your dreams.
